Broadcom and Stop Hunger Now, Educator Program, Society for Action in Community Health
1 comment
Society for Action in Community Health (SACH) has come a long way since it was founded in 1988 by a group of medical professionals. Initially focused on policy advocacy to improve the access of the urban poor to public health services in India, the organisation over the years, has grown to become one of the pioneering models for sustainable interventions in the area of policy and program formulation in health sector.
In the past one decade SACH sought to expand beyond the health issues related to urban poor and engaged in activities with changing times. One of the chief reasons for this was emerging new health concerns affecting both rich and poor. Side by side the organisation engaged in activities spread across variety of areas like education, skill development, water and sanitation, geriatrics care, hunger and relief and disaster response. Some of the major inventions during period include Geriatrics Center set up in Pitampura, New Delhi with the help of HelpAge India, and the collaboration with Project Hope, USA in 2008, to train over 4000 Diabetes Educators under flagship India Diabetes Educator Program (IDEP) by partnering with leading endocrinologists, researchers and medical education institutions in many parts of the county.
In 2015, SACH joined hands with HDFC and successfully implemented School Restoration Project in 13 schools which were affected by 2014 floods. Alongside, we constructed/renovated sanitation units in more than 250 schools in Meghalaya and Punjab and started a Meal Packaging Prorgramme with Broadcom and Stop Hunger Now (SHN) to address the poverty conditions like hunger and malnutrition in Bengaluru. SACH has managed to reach out to the people in Banka and Prakasam districts of Bihar and Andhra Pradesh respectively and provided them access to health care through Mobile Health Units (MHUs). The programme is supported by Kraft Heinz.
Earlier, SACH partnered with Global Green Fund in 2014 to help deprived communities access right to water and sanitation, water for drinking and domestic needs and sanitation and solid waste management in selected slum areas in Delhi. We also spread awareness about sanitation and hygiene with GIZ. With renewed focus of the previous government and the current regime, SACH conducted a study during 2012-13)to delve into the causes of pollution to river Ganges in the city of Kanpur with India Water Partnership (IWP) and Society for Promotion of Wasteland Development (SPWD) Delhi.
